Gel, acrylic and dip powder are the three most requested nail services. They all last longer than regular polish, but they're applied differently and each one is better for certain needs.

Gel manicure

Gel is a polish that hardens under an LED or UV lamp. It's applied on your natural nails, looks very shiny and dries instantly.

• Lasts: about two to three weeks.
• Best for: natural nails that are already a good length; a clean, glossy look.
• Removal: soaked off with acetone. Don't peel it: that takes layers of your nail with it.

Acrylic nails

Acrylic is a mix of liquid and powder that forms a hard layer over your nail or over a tip. It's the most popular option for length and dramatic shapes like coffin, stiletto or long almond.

• Lasts: needs a fill about every two to three weeks as your nails grow.
• Best for: adding length, nail art, 3D designs and anyone who wants strong nails.
• Removal: filed down and soaked off at the salon.

Dip powder

With dip powder, the nail is coated with a base and dipped (or brushed) in colored powder, then sealed. It's stronger than gel and doesn't need a lamp.

• Lasts: about three to four weeks.
• Best for: people who want strong, long-lasting color on their natural length.
• Removal: filed and soaked off with acetone.
