Hair extensions guide: sew-in, cost, how long they last and care

Long voluminous curls with highlights

Extensions are the fastest way to add length, volume or fullness to your hair. If you've never had them, it's normal to have questions. Here's a clear guide so you know what to expect.

What is a sew-in?

A sew-in (also called a weave) is one of the most popular extension methods. Your natural hair is braided into cornrows, and wefts of hair are sewn onto the braids with a needle and thread. Depending on the style, some of your own hair can be left out to blend with the extensions, or your hair can be completely covered with a closure.

Why clients love it: it doesn't use glue or heat to attach, it can look very natural, and your own hair stays protected underneath.

Other extension methods

  • Clip-ins: you put them in and take them out yourself. Good for special occasions.
  • Tape-ins: thin wefts attached with adhesive close to the root.
  • Micro-links / beads: small strands attached with tiny rings, without glue.

Each one has pros and cons depending on your hair type and lifestyle. Ask us which methods we offer and which one fits you best.

How long does a sew-in last?

A sew-in usually lasts six to eight weeks. Leaving it in much longer can cause matting and tension on your natural hair. Good-quality hair can often be reused for another install if it's well cared for.

How much does a sew-in cost?

At Alexa's Dominican Salon, sew-in extensions start at $250. The final price depends on the length, the amount of hair and the style (leave-out, closure, frontal). Ask whether the hair is included or if you should bring your own.

How to care for your extensions

  1. Keep your scalp clean. Wash gently every one to two weeks and dry completely, including the braids underneath, to avoid odor and buildup.
  2. Sleep with a satin scarf or bonnet. It reduces tangling and frizz.
  3. Brush from the ends up. Use a wide-tooth comb or a soft brush and hold the hair at the root.
  4. Protect from heat. Use heat protectant and moderate temperatures, especially on human hair.
  5. Don't skip removal. Have them taken out by a professional and give your hair a treatment before the next install.

Will extensions damage my hair?

When they're installed with the right tension and removed on time, extensions can actually protect your hair. Problems usually come from braids that are too tight, leaving them in too long or skipping care. Tell your stylist if anything feels painful.
