How long does a silk press last? (And how to make it last longer)

Smooth silk press on long hair

A silk press gives natural hair a smooth, flowing, straight finish without chemicals. It's done with a thorough wash and deep condition, a careful blow dry and a flat iron in small sections. Because nothing changes the hair permanently, the result lasts until moisture brings your natural texture back.

How long does it usually last?

For most people, a silk press lasts one to two weeks. Some clients keep it longer with good care, and others see it revert in a few days during a humid New Jersey summer. Your hair type, density and daily routine all make a difference.

What makes a silk press revert

  • Humidity and rain: moisture in the air is the main reason hair goes back to its natural texture.
  • Sweat: workouts and hot days loosen the press, especially at the roots and edges.
  • Water: showers without protection, swimming or washing too soon.
  • Heavy products: oils and creams applied too often can weigh hair down and make it look flat or greasy.

How to make your silk press last longer

  1. Wrap it every night. Wrap your hair around your head (a "doobie" wrap) or pin it loosely, then cover it with a satin or silk scarf or bonnet.
  2. Sleep on satin or silk. A satin pillowcase reduces friction and frizz if your scarf slips off.
  3. Protect it from water. Use a shower cap, and carry an umbrella or a scarf on rainy days.
  4. Go light on products. A small amount of light serum on the ends is usually enough.
  5. Avoid daily heat. Repeated flat-iron touch-ups at home can damage your hair. If you do touch up, always use a heat protectant and low heat.

How often can I get a silk press?

Healthy hair needs breaks from heat. Many stylists recommend spacing presses out and combining them with deep conditioning and regular trims. Ask your stylist what's right for your hair: we look at its condition before every press.
