Keratin treatment: how long it lasts, aftercare and who it's for

Long smooth hair after a keratin smoothing treatment

If you fight frizz every morning or spend too long blow drying, a keratin treatment can make your routine much easier. Here's what it is, how long it lasts and how to take care of it so you get the most out of it.

What is a keratin treatment?

A keratin treatment (also called keratin smoothing) is a salon service that coats the hair with a smoothing formula and seals it with a flat iron. It reduces frizz, adds shine and makes hair easier to blow dry. Depending on the formula and your hair, the result can range from softer, more manageable waves to much straighter hair.

It's different from a relaxer: a keratin treatment works mostly on the outside of the hair and fades little by little, instead of permanently changing your curl pattern.

How long does it last?

Most keratin treatments last about three to five months. How long yours lasts depends on the formula, your hair type, how often you wash and the products you use. It fades gradually, so there's no harsh line of regrowth like with a relaxer.

Who is it for?

  • Frizzy, puffy or hard-to-manage hair.
  • People who blow dry often and want to save time.
  • Hair that's colored or highlighted (ask your stylist first, since it should be in good condition).
  • Anyone in a humid climate like a New Jersey summer.

It may not be the right choice if you want to keep your full natural curl, or if you're pregnant or sensitive to strong fumes. Ask us about the formula before your appointment.

Aftercare: how to make it last

  1. Follow your stylist's wait time. Some formulas ask you to wait one to three days before washing, tying or pinning your hair. Others let you wash the same day. Ask which one you got.
  2. Use sulfate-free shampoo. Sulfates and deep-cleansing shampoos remove the treatment faster.
  3. Be careful with chlorine and salt water. Rinse your hair with fresh water after the pool or beach.
  4. Keep heat low. You'll need less heat to style, which is good for your hair.
  5. Space out color. Ask your stylist whether to color before or after the treatment.

Keratin or blowout?

A Dominican blowout or silk press gives you smooth hair for one to two weeks with no chemicals. Keratin lasts months and makes those blowouts faster and smoother. Many clients combine both.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a keratin treatment last?

Usually about three to five months, depending on the formula, your hair type and how you care for it.

When can I wash my hair after keratin?

It depends on the formula. Some require waiting one to three days, others allow washing the same day. Always follow your stylist's instructions.

Is keratin the same as a relaxer?

No. A relaxer permanently changes the hair's structure. Keratin smooths and reduces frizz and fades gradually over a few months.
