Knotless vs. box braids: which one is right for you?

Knotless braids and box braids are two of the most popular protective styles. They can look similar from far away, but they're installed differently, and that changes how they feel and look up close.
The main difference: how the braid starts
Box braids start with a small knot at the root, where the extension hair is attached to your natural hair. Knotless braids start with your own hair only, and the extension hair is fed in gradually as the braid grows. That's why knotless braids look flatter and more natural at the scalp.
Side by side
- Look: knotless braids look softer and more natural at the root. Box braids have a fuller, more defined base.
- Tension: knotless braids usually put less pull on the scalp at the start, which many clients find more comfortable from day one.
- Flexibility: knotless braids tend to move and lay flat sooner, so updos are often easier in the first days.
- Time in the chair: knotless braids usually take longer to install, because the hair is added little by little.
- Size and length: for both styles, smaller and longer braids take more time and cost more.
How long can I keep them in?
Many people keep braids in for about four to eight weeks. Leaving them much longer can cause buildup, matting and stress on your edges. Your stylist can tell you what's right for your hair.
Care tips for any braids
- Sleep with a satin or silk scarf or bonnet.
- Keep your scalp clean and moisturized with light products.
- Don't pull braids into very tight ponytails, especially in the first days.
- Take them out gently, and give your hair a wash, deep condition and a short break before the next style.
