Skin fade vs. taper fade: what's the difference and what to ask your barber

"Give me a fade" can mean a lot of things. Knowing the difference between a skin fade and a taper, and between low, mid and high, helps you walk out with exactly the cut you wanted.
What is a fade?
A fade is a cut where the hair on the sides and back goes gradually from longer at the top to very short at the bottom, with a smooth blend and no visible lines between lengths.
Skin fade (bald fade)
In a skin fade, the hair at the bottom is taken all the way down to the skin with a foil shaver or razor. It's the sharpest, highest-contrast look. Because it's so short, it shows regrowth quickly and looks best with a touch-up every one to two weeks.
Taper fade
A taper is more subtle: the fade is concentrated only around the sideburns and the neckline, and most of the sides stay with more length. It looks clean and professional, grows out more naturally and is perfect for curly hair, longer styles and work settings.
Low, mid and high fade
- Low fade: starts just above the ear. Clean and conservative.
- Mid fade: starts around the middle of the sides. The most popular balance.
- High fade: starts near the top of the head. Bold, high-contrast look.
You can combine them: for example, a "mid skin fade" or a "low taper."
Which one suits me?
- Round face: a mid or high fade with volume on top adds height.
- Long face: a low fade or taper keeps proportions balanced.
- Curly hair: a taper or low fade lets your curls stand out on top.
- Office job: a taper or low fade looks professional and grows out cleanly.
What to tell your barber
- The type of fade: skin or taper.
- Where it starts: low, mid or high.
- How much length on top, and how you style it.
- Extras: hard part, line-up, beard trim or design.
- Bring a photo. It's the easiest way to get it right.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a skin fade and a taper?
A skin fade goes down to the skin and has more contrast. A taper only shortens the sideburns and neckline, so it's more subtle and grows out more naturally.
How often should I get my fade touched up?
A skin fade looks best every one to two weeks. A taper can usually go two to three weeks.
