How to make your braids last longer: 8 tips from our braiders

Neat stitch braids seen from the back

Braids are an investment of time and money, so you want them to look fresh as long as possible. With a few simple habits, you can keep them neat for weeks and protect your natural hair at the same time.

How long do braids last?

  • Knotless and box braids: usually four to eight weeks.
  • Cornrows / stitch braids: usually one to three weeks, since they're close to the scalp and show regrowth faster.

Leaving braids in much longer than that can cause matting at the roots and stress on your hairline.

8 tips to make your braids last

  1. Sleep with a satin scarf or bonnet. This is the most important habit. It prevents frizz and keeps the parts clean.
  2. Moisturize your scalp lightly. A light oil or braid spray two or three times a week. Avoid heavy grease that builds up.
  3. Don't over-wash. Wash every one to two weeks, focusing on the scalp, and let the braids dry completely.
  4. Use a little mousse for frizz. Apply foam mousse, smooth it down and tie your scarf for 20 to 30 minutes.
  5. Be gentle with your edges. Avoid very tight ponytails and buns, especially in the first days.
  6. Protect them at the gym. Wear a headband and let your scalp dry after sweating.
  7. Touch up the front. Redoing just the front braids can give you a few more weeks.
  8. Take them out on time. Don't push them too long: your natural hair needs a wash, treatment and rest.

Signs it's time to take them out

  • Lots of regrowth and the braids hang loose from the root.
  • Buildup or flakes that won't come off.
  • Pain, bumps or thinning at the hairline.
